Lesson 1: Pre-Assessment

30 Minutes
(OPtional)

Lesson Objectives: Students will complete a pre-assessment.

Materials Needed: Pre-assessment (Worksheet - Test)

Introduction: Today students will complete their pre-assessment to show what they know prior to learning with Norilla SmartRamps.

  • Students complete their pre-assessment.


Lesson 2: Scientific Method to Explore Forces & Motion

30-45 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

  • Articulate information about what a ramp and why ramps are important

  • Suggest options for increasing the speed of an object on a ramp and evaluating the results

Materials Needed:

  • NoRILLA

  • SmartRamps

  • Pre-built cars and objects


Lesson 3 & 4

Lesson 3: Scientific Method to Explore Effects of Shape, Weight, Potential Energy & Friction

 

Lesson Objectives:

  • Articulate information about what a ramp and why ramps are important

  • Suggest options for increasing the speed of an object on a ramp and evaluating the results

Materials Needed:

  • NoRILLA/Smart Ramps

  • Pre-built objects/cars

  • drawing paper

  • crayons, markers, etc.

  • Building materials such as Legos, paper plates, cardboard, cereal boxes, origami paper, toilet paper rolls, tape etc.

  • Rulers or snap cubes for measurement

Lesson 4: Scientific Method to Explore Effects of Shape, Weight, Potential Energy & Friction

 

Lesson Objectives:

  • (Same as lesson 3)

  • Articulate information about what a ramp and why ramps are important

  • Suggest options for increasing the speed of an object on a ramp and evaluating the results

Lesson 5: Using Engineering Design Practice to Build Cars or Objects

30-45 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

  • Interact with the NoRILLA Smart Ramp in COMPETE Mode

  • Identify design options that will increase the speed of an object on a ramp

  • Apply knowledge about objects moving on an inclined surface to predict comparative acceleration

Materials Needed:

  • NoRILLA

  • Cars/Objects


Lesson 6 & 7

Lesson 6: Potential Energy (weight in back vs. weight in front)

40 minute

Lesson Objectives:

  • Articulate information the impact of weight on speed of an object moving on a ramp

  • Apply options for increasing the speed of an object on a ramp

  • Evaluating the results of tests of the impacts of different materials on movement of an object on a ramp

Materials Needed:

  • NoRILLA

  • Building materials such as Lego cars (provided), K’nex, Vex IQ cars, CDs for wheels

  • Cereal boxes

  • Pringles cans

  • Design, Predict and Build Cars worksheet

  • Foam board or cardboard ramp (provided)

Lesson 7: Engineering Design Process to Design, Predict, & Build Cars

40 minute

Lesson Objectives:

Introduction: Let students know that they have completed their lessons using NoRILLA SmartRamps. Today they will complete their post-assessment to show what they have learned.

  • Students complete their post-assessment.
